Together, we are developing the largest and most inclusive phone, chat, and text-based mental health peer-support network in California’s history. We believe all people deserve equity, safety, and dignity in their journey toward mental wellness and strive to support all Californians in need through low-barrier, individualized, strengths-based, voluntary support.

Partnerships across our corner of the continuum of care ..

(THE) Support Coalition of California

THE Support Coalition is a broader collaborative of telephonic, web chat, and text-based services throughout California, many of whom provide upstream crisis prevention and emotional support services.

With the goal of helping to form a Warm Line Federation, THE Support Coalition of California will provide support and development to establish and strengthen peer-run warm line programs across the state of California.

Goals

  • Inventory of existing Warm Line and Warm Line adjacent services.

  • Conduct a Community Needs Assessment of CA peer-based tele-mental health services/ Warm Lines.

  • Integrate existing Warm Line services to ensure support for various communities including LGBTQ+, BIPOC, rural, youth, elder, parent and caregiver, and other communities.

  • Explore interoperability between Warm Line service providers including referral partnerships, unified software, technology, and data sharing.

  • Identify additional program development opportunities based on need and population specific service goals.

Warmline Model Practices

  • How are [peer-operated] warmlines different from other helplines, crisis lines, and non-peer-run emotional support programs?

  • How do warmlines prioritize both program sustainability and the wellness of their peer staff?

  • Are peer staff, non-coercive services, and maintaining Peer Values essential elements that make a line a warmline? (Spoiler alert: yes!)

These guidelines are intended to inform the design and improvement of warmline programs, define and describe what makes a program a “warmline”, and document model elements of warmline programs.

These were determined by a consensus of warmline program leaders with decades of combined subject matter expertise, practical operational experience, and lived and living experience–we welcome your feedback. This is a living document and will be revised and replaced as our clearinghouse of guidance develops in our community of practice.
