Healing the Soul Wound: Healing as Resistance

Betania Santos is a Ph.D., Sociology student at UC Santa Cruz from La Puente, CA. Her doctoral research is centered on community healing and exploring how social justice organizing youth groups throughout California practice “healing”, as a mode for political justice. This work is strongly rooted in her own personal narrative, as healing spaces in her community have been crucial to her well being by offering sanctuary, cultural knowledge, tools for mental health, and overall empowerment. Through sharing lived experience and knowledge, Betania hopes to foster healthier futures for communities of color.

This workshop will explore how politically and culturally centered spaces of healing, can serve communities of color in their healing and overall well being. By introducing topics of historical trauma, legacies of colonialism, and structural racism, we can begin to address the impact they bring on patients' mental health. In addition, this workshop will also explore how meditation and cultural centered healing practices can serve as tools both for the communities we serve as well as the practitioner.
