Keynote Presentations by:
Professor Michael Kyrios, Ph.D.

Presenting on May 03, 2013
Professor Michael Kyrios is a clinical psychologist and Chair in Psychology in the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences at Swinburne University where he is also Director of the Brain and Psychological Sciences Research Centre (BPsyC), and leads the National e-Therapy Centre. Dr. Kyrios has been researching compulsive hoarding for over 15 years, conducting Australia’s first in-depth study of compulsive hoarding. Along with Richard Moulding and colleagues at Swinburne University, he set up a hoarding research and treatment program. D.r Kyrios’ expert talks and workshops around management of hoarding problems are recognized and in demand across Australia and around the world.
Jordana Muroff, Ph.D.

Dr. Jordana Muroff is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Social Work, Clinical Practice Department. Dr. Muroff received specialized training in cognitive behavioral therapy methods (CBT) with children and adults. Dr. Muroff is a licensed social worker with extensive clinical experience. She has published and presented widely in the areas in CBT for children and adults with anxiety disorders, and especially OCD and hoarding, the influence of race and ethnicity on clinical diagnostic decisions, and the use of technology in assessment and interventions. Her research has been funded by the Obsessive Compulsive Foundation, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and SAMHSA.
Peer Response Team

Peer Response Team (PRT) is here to help individuals and families access the supports they need when and where they need it most. MHASF provides free weekly Peer-led groups that include a weekly Support Group, an 8-week Action Group, and a 15-week semi- structured group based on the book Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, and Hoarding. addressing the complex issues around compulsive hoarding and cluttering behaviors.
A team of trained Peer Responders is on-call to assist San Francisco Residents with any problems associated with compulsive acquisitions (hoarding) and clutter.
Training Institute

Attendees will learn strategies to facilitate and manage a 15-week peer-led support group based on the book, Buried in Treasure: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving, Hoarding, by Dr. Randy Frost, Dr. David Tolin, and Dr. Gail Steketee. The training will also delve into deeper issues and not solely focus the “stuff” that individuals have.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- How to provide structure, insights, and organizational tools needed facilitate and run successful 15-week self-help support group.
- How to structure and create focus at group meetings through outlines and teaching goals.
- How to build a non-judgmental, understanding, and encouraging group environment to help build a community of support.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy Training (CBT) – Dr. Michael Tompkins

Clinicians will learn strategies to evaluate and develop treatment plans for people with hoarding disorder, and the typical cognitive and behavioral strategies used to treat the condition. Because even those with hoarding disorder who are open to treatment have variable insight, the workshop will emphasize strategies to enhance willingness to adhere with the goals and tasks of the therapy. The workshop will include didactic and experiential learning, as well as video of important components of cognitive-behavior therapy.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Attendees will learn the cognitive behavioral model of compulsive hoarding.
- Attendees will learn to evaluate and develop a treatment plan for hoarding disorder.
- Attendees will learn typical cognitive and behavioral interventions for hoarding disorder.
